Traveling for business can be full of perks and benefits. From traveling to new destinations to expense account meals, there isn’t much to complain about—except maybe our eating habits. When it comes to making healthy food choices, we’ve all been there. Eating healthy and nutritious becomes more of a challenge when we’re traveling for work, in an unfamiliar place and on a tight schedule. To help all of our downtown Calgary business travelers, here are five healthy eating tips to keep you feeling great.
1. Stay hydrated
Thirst can often be mistaken with hunger, so make sure to drink up (especially if you have just flown, because airplane air can be very dehydrating)
2. Stick to your regular schedule
Keep your schedule going by planning to eat meals when you know you’ll be hungry. If you must wait to eat with colleagues or clients, have healthy snacks on hand to avoid overeating at mealtime.
3. Always eat breakfast
Skipping a morning meal can leave you craving junk food later on. Opt for a balance of protein, carbs, and fats to keep you full all day. Hard-boiled eggs, whole-wheat toast, fruit and yogurt are all good options.
If you’re visiting us at Hotel Blackfoot, check out of Green’s Restaurant breakfast menu, full of gluten-free, vegetarian and dairy-free options. Book a room on our executive floor to enjoy a complimentary European continental breakfast.
4. Search for healthy options close by
Look for words on menus like “grilled,” “steamed,” “baked,” “roasted,” “poached” and “broiled” when you’re on the go.
Our favourite Calgary health eats spots include: Goro + Gun, downtownfood, The Coup, Our Daily Brett and Blue Star Diner.
5. Pace yourself at happy hour
A glass of wine is a great way to de-stress after a long day of hard work. Just one glass of red wine per day has been proven to burn fat and lower blood pressure. With that being said, wine, beer and mixed drinks are all loaded with calories and drinking can make it difficult to make healthy choices at dinner. Avoid alcohol at your work functions, or keep it to a minimum and have a glass of water before having another alcoholic beverage.
